From Megabat with Love
- Anna Humphrey
- Tundra Books, 2025

Just in time for Valentine’s Day there’s a new Megabat book to delight readers both familiar and new.
Megabat, a tiny fruit bat who lives comfortably with human hosts, is in love with a beautiful pigeon, Birdgirl. As Valentine’s Day approaches, he enlists the help of his human friends to express his feelings to Birdgirl — and has some outrageous adventures doing so. Yet Birdgirl doesn’t appreciate his efforts. What’s a heartsore bat to do?
This is a fairly accessible book for confident beginning readers. (Megabat’s mangled language may cause some concerns, especially for emerging readers who are reading aloud.) The illustrations break up and support the text effectively, and the comic misadventures involving friends, family, and community keep the plot moving quickly. The animal fantasy element will also provide a hook for many readers. If they enjoy this volume of Megabat’s story, there are several more to read, and the stories — apart from the first book — are sequentially interchangeable.
A gentle, lighthearted story, From Megabat with Love would be a fun choice for paired or supported reading and is well paced for a teacher to read aloud in class. It’s a great addition to school and classroom libraries, as well as home collections.
